PostSubject: Investigation Is Gruesome But Someone's Gotta Do It   Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:16 pm

Zoya frowned as she leaned against a random tree bark. Her head was aching mildly, but nothing too extreme. It was just a result of the massive amount of liquor she had consumed yesterday, allowing herself one night to wallow in her misery and throw herself a pity party, before going back to business. Her mood was neither helped by the fact that she was back on the campuses of Stellar, doing something she had promised herself she won't nor by the fact that Aaron had broken his promise and was late.

Setting the coffee cups and pack of muffins carefully on the grass, she fished out her gloves from one of her numerous pockets. She was wearing the jacket she had worn yesterday night over a simple, over-sized top and skinny jeans. With her messy hair, she fit in pretty well with the rest of the student body, a fact she had been unknowingly counting on. She knew these were dangerous waters to read, that whatever was powerful enough to kill Charles Hunter could silence her too if she ever got troublesome. "You are late." She stated simply, turning to face Aaron and handing him his cup of coffee and a pair of gloves. She didn't know if he had brought them, but experience had taught her to always offer.

"Want to know the official facts?" She asked expectantly. Efficient as always but only when investigating, she had already checked all the newspaper reports and gossip tabloids and also buttered up to the local police inspector while buying the coffee, using flattery, a little advantage of looks and playing the 'I-am-new-and-scared-here' card, to gain all the facts about the case. Even the ones kept away from media.

"Yeah I owe you a coffee" Aaron sheepishly admitted as he fixed his rumpled hair and adjusted his dress. He was still dressed how he had been last night. He waved over the field at a figure who was approaching "but I did it for the sake of the case. You told me to practise being good with people. Well apparently last night I was goood with people." He took the gloves and slid them on and then thankfully took the coffee. He knew he had not earned it, having not kept his side of the deal. But he was not hungover, late but not hungover. He had spent the entirety of last night at the pool and then his apartment but no bars "but at least I am late and no hungover - rather than both!"

"Anyhow she is the forensic scientist, the one working on the case ... so she could be a lot of help. She is very talented as well" Aaron explained his line of thinking to his partner with what he hoped was a winning smile "so yes enlighten me of the facts. What do we know that Catastrophe Barbie has not shared with me already." He fell silent and decided not to comment further on the other girl until she reached them. Best not to press Zoya when she was clearly not in a good mood. Best to just let her do her bit, and share what she had learned on the case he had made her do.

"I should take away your coffee, I made you a deal, remember? You lay off a girl and I buy you coffee." Zoya scolded half-heartedly, she was much more observed in trying to find the elusive slip of paper on which she had written the facts. She may have been efficient in investigating and gathering facts, but she was still Zoya. After a few minutes of frantic searching, she found the paper and opened it up with flourish. "OK, the facts are, Mr. Hunter had asked for police protection citing reasons of, quote 'Personal Disease and Professional Threat', unquote. He was due to appear in court the day after the one on which he was murdered. According to the school staff, he had been secretive and paranoid for about a month or so and they were debating with the School Board to sack him. They were afraid he was losing his marbles. Some say that it was a suicide though police reports, disagree." She finished and looked up from the piece of paper, looking in the direction of the approaching figure. "I will mail this to you later and you have to fix up a meeting with hunter after this."

"Forensic Expert? A bit too high for you, ain't she?" Zoya asked, raising an eyebrow at the approaching figure. She didn't like the look of the girl and the closer she came the more Zoya got annoyed by her. "Anyway, that's good. I was planning to break into the Forensic lab later to get the report, but I guess your 'charm' can work on it now."

"Hence why I owe you a coffee ... ooo muffins" Aaron replied getting distracted and tugging the paper bag towards him. He watched amused as his partner looked for the elusive piece of paper. At least whatever else changed Zoya would remain pretty much the same. "It was not suicide - that just does not fit" Aaron replied simply, when he thought something was true it became fact to him. He trusted his instincts and they rarely led him astray. He was on a case, he was working, and he was not hungover. He was in good form. Especially after his swim the night before. Nodding he added "right, that should be fun. Will see how many times I can insult him without him noticing ..."

"Excuse me? I like a girl with brains, and apparently she likes a guy with brains" Aaron retorted as he pretended to be offended by her implication. He shot a cheerful smile at Cassandra as she came up to them. She was not exactly dressed for work, but he would take what he could get and hope she did not annoy Zoya too much. He turned to address her when she came up beside him and asked, with one hand out "you got the report for my beautiful partner here, sweetcheeks?"

"But pookey, I thought I was the beautiful one" Cassandra cooed fluttering her eyelashes at him and wrapping one arm around his arm. She shot an un-impressed and rather jealous look at Zoya but did offer the folder with the correct files. She then turned back to Aaron and continued "it is bad enough you spent all last night talking about her ..." with that comment she pouted heavily. Her glossy smile clearly evident. She spotted the muffins and her pout was replaced with a triumphant smile "oh well look at that, the little darling has provided snacks, how quaint!" She took the unbitten muffin right out of Aaron's hands and ignoring the slight frown that crossed his features she took a bite. Before continuing until she had eaten the whole thing.

"Thank you pookey" she declared despite the fact Aaron was clearly unimpressed by this action, and she then continued to talk "well I went through all the files and got every single piece of documentation that I thought might be relevant. It was really hard work but you were worth it pookey. We had such a good time last night I just knew you would want to see me again!" Hence why Cassandra had chosen to dress as a slutty forensic scientist rather than a working one.

"Agreed. And for once even the Police don't believe that this is suicide. Foul Play is a definite possibility here, there must be a reason why...the victim, was asking for police protection." Zoya replied thoughtfully, taking a muffin out of the bag. She didn't have a lot of respect for Policemen, and whatever little she had of it, it got diminished each time she spoke to one. Smiling, she focused back to Aaron and smiled at him, "Yeah add some from my side too, but be careful okay? I don't care what everyone says, we cannot rule out Hunter as a suspect." As usual, Zoya's overly suspicious and cautious nature was making an appearance, but she never regretted it. She had been in far too many corners too take so many risks.

"She has a brain?" She asked incredulously, pointing towards the sluttish figure approaching them. Just from the look of the girl she could tell she would hate her. She rolled her eyes at exchange between the two and held her hand out for the files, snatching them unceremoniously from the girl's hands. She tried her best to ignore the girl, but when she commented on the muffins, Zoya's head snapped up from the files and she glared at Cassandra, disbelief written all over her face. "Little? Darling? Quaint? 'Scuse me! I am older to you and taller than you, so it will be good if you shut up!" She didn't care that she didn't sound very mature with that statement, her mood was already bad and this girl wasn't helping.

"Thank you." She added stiffly, trying to control her anger. Zoya hated people butting in when she was investigating and Cassandra was someone she would have knocked out even if she wasn't investigating. "Pokey? I would like a word with you." She said, raising an eyebrow and dragging Aaron to a spot away from the girl. "Listen, the Barbie has done what she can and I don't care if you want to meet her again but she is NOT going to stick around here. Throw her out or let me knock her out!" She hissed, glaring in the general direction of the girl.

"I am always careful - I am the epitome of careful. Though for some reason I do not feel right about Hunter, you would think he would be more keen to talk to us ... something is funny there" Aaron murmured away only half talking to his partner as he picked up a train of thought. He turned away slightly as he held his muffin and continued that train of thought, talking away to himself as he made each idea connect, coming up with a theory based on what she had said - making it all make sense to him. He then blinked out of his thoughts when Cassandra actually arrived. He was now forced to give her his entire attention instead of his thoughts.

"Witchy little thing aren't you, she is smarter than she looks" Aaron told Zoya with evident amusement at her comment. If he did not know Zoya better he would say she was jealous, but that was impossible. He did not hear anything else because he was watching with unimpressed disbelief as the muffin was removed from his hands. Anyone that knew anything about Aaron knew one thing, he did not share food. His sweet tooth was as important to him as any other part of him. The very idea of her taking his muffin was horrifying to him. He just stared at her with his mouth slightly open, looking between the muffin and her face as she ate it, letting out a squeak of protest with each bite.

He vaguely felt Zoya tugging him away from Cassandra and informing him something about her wanting the other girl to leave and whether or not he wanted to see her again. He started in a fake cheerful tone "well she could be help ..." he trailed off and shaking his head finished "I am sorry I could not get through that, she ate my muffin! She ate my muffin! My muffin ... and she just ate it. My muffin! She ate my muffin!" He just kept repeating that phrase as he inspected his empty hands "I mean she was entertaining last night ... but she ate my muffin!" Aaron was well aware, just like Cassandra, most of the time he did not sound as intelligent as he was. Though he was much more intelligent than Cassandra, and how he sounded right now, the principle was the same.

"I will not shut up! Pookey are you going to let her talk to me like that? Pookey?" Cassandra protested in an indignant screech as she looked expectantly across at Aaron. He was apparently still focussed on the loss of his muffin and did not reply. She frowned at him and snapped "well that is nice I must say! If I know you, and I do know you, then your going to regret this pookey!" The statement was rediculas considering she had just met Aaron and clearly did not actually know his character at all. "First you refuse to stay home with me today, despite the fact I begged you to, and now you wont even defend me, how could you pookey!" Cassandra's wail trailed off and she pouted again.

Aaron had resisted her insistence he stay home, partially for Zoya, but also because he needed this case to keep him sane and off the drugs. The fact Cassandra clearly did not get that might have registered with Aaron if he had not been distracted by the muffin. She stomped her foot and pouted more when Zoya pulled Aaron away. Well she would not let this happen. She was going to hang on to Aaron of it was the last thing she did. She was going to make him stay with her. Even if it meant upsetting his partner. He did not need any stupid old job when he could have her! Right? Of course. She was amazing, and worth twice as much as any witchy old partner of his. So folding her arms she stood waiting for them to stop discussing her.

"If you want to get out of here on your feet and NOT in a body bag, you will!" Zoya snapped at Cassandra, resisting the urge to punch her in the face to stop that annoying screeching voice. If the girl stayed here any longer, Zoya would kill someone and it most definitely would not be herself. "And by the way, if your non-existing brain didn't register, he already has." She called out as she dragged Aaron away.

Turning to him, she snapped, "I will give you a muffin! Get her out of my investigation site now!" pushing the bag of muffins in his hands and going back to the girl. She gave a glare to her, clearly telling her that it would be in her best interest to shut up and opened up the files again. She had to admit, no matter how grudgingly, but the girl had certainly got all the documents they would need. Now to just get her out of this place before she snapped all of Zoya's patience. It was less as it is and then her mood wasn't very good either. She needed to take out all her anger on someone and if the girl didn't get out of here, it was clear who that person was going to be. "Now, get out of my way while I do something you don't. Use my brain." She added sweetly to the girl, pushing her aside to study the bark of the tree.

"Well I better get that meeting sorted with Hunter, and you hunny better go" Aaron announced shooting Zoya a worried look before taking Cassandra's arm and escorting her away a few steps. There was a whispered argument, and then Aaron accepted a sloppy kiss from the other girl before pushing her towards the exit. Ignoring her giggle, and her wave, he turned back to Zoya the moment Cassie was out of sight. Letting out a heavy sigh he announced "well whether or not I deserved it, I certainly needed that coffee. I need energy today. So where to now boss?"

He was not going to push Zoya when she was so clearly in a fowl mood. Even if, just to get her to leave, he had to promise to meet her for drinks later. Maybe he could tell her he had interviews today. Maybe he should be a man and just not call. However she was decent, sweet, and slutty - what more could he ask. Yes, after what happened recently maybe he needed to keep her around some more even if it drove Zoya crazy. Talking about his partner, he shot her a smile and added "well okay maybe she has not learned the not sharing of food rule, and maybe she tried to persuade me to skive work, but I like her all the same. She has a certain something ... a certain two somethings actually!"

"You, go pick up some electronic bugs and then fix up a meeting with Hunter. He's hiding something and we still don't know why he wanted to hire us in the first place." Zoya replied distractedly, studying the disturbed foliage carefully. "But before you do that, check this out." She called out to him, pointing towards the crushed foliage beside the tree that she had been checking out. "I think we are dealing with a professional. I mean just look at it! There is no other sign that someone was here, and this can just be attributed to reading signs too deeply." She muttered thoughtfully, peering out from behind the tree to check whether the spot where the body had been found could be seen from here. "Yup, perfect spot."

"She tried to make you skive work and you still want to go out with her?" She asked in slight disbelief, smacking Aaron for his last comment. "Seriously Aaron, if you continue to behave this way, you will soon be the proud father of a child the lady has no interest in taking care of. And if we go by the degrading mental capabilities of your 'friends', the child will be born with barely ant brain cells!" She added seriously, her expression clearly showing her concern. Technically, she wasn't as concerned about what she stated as she was letting on. It was the uneasy feeling that she would be seeing a lot more of Cassandra than she wanted to that concerned her.

"Did he want to hire us? Or was he pressured into it by the entirely real possibility that everyone thinks he did it and he has to appear to be doing something" Aaron replied though it was more of a statement than an actual question, the result of his earlier thought train before the disruption. Following up behind her he inspected the ground with a cynical and all together far too critical air. "Who ever made these marks was definitely human, but I can tell you for certain it was not our murderer" he replied with a shrug as he pointed one finger down to where a neat set of holes and marks could be seen near to the broken grass "ever heard of someone committing murder, that was not a poison, in high heels? I think you my very favourite partner have just found proof that somewhere out there is a witness who has not come forward and we need to find her. Assuming it is a her, and not a very short transvestite!"

"Well alright there are some potential kinks in the relationship that need to be worked out ..." Aaron admitted without looking away from his notebook, that he had taken out, where he was scribbling down everything he was picking up from the crime scene "but she is not brainless, she managed to get a degree in forensic science and therefore she merely has trouble showing her smart side. She is a social butterfly with showing her smarts issues. I am a smarty with social issues - that is why we work. You are simply worried being in her presence too much might cause you to lose some of your smarts ... now wanna here what Sherlock Grace has managed to deduce - or should I go now, and share with you later when your less witchy!"

PostSubject: Re: Investigation Is Gruesome But Someone's Gotta Do It   Sat Jan 28, 2012 3:53 pm

"But why us? A nameless Private Investigation Agency when he could have hired anyone on this planet?" Zoya replied pointedly, leaning on the tree and taking a sip of her almost forgotten, now barely warm coffee and taking a bite out of her muffin. She had spent the morning finishing up one of their cases. Something about a wife suspecting her husband when he was just being secretive about the job he lost. Seriously, the things that people do to keep their pride intact, she thought with a roll of her grey eyes, wincing as the action caused a flare of protest in her head ache.

"And I would like to remind you, my ever trustworthy partner, that the murdered could have been wearing high heels. Like I am guessing, this seems to be the work of a professional and surely you, with you special knowledge of pretty ladies should know that female assassins aren't unheard of. In fact, they are far more common than people like to believe." She pointed out, making a mental note to check up on the witness lead. She doubted Aaron would have heard much about female assassins, it was usually her job to do the boring, yet essential work of keeping their records up to date. Even now, all she had to do was plug in the flash drive disguised as a pendent into her computer's or laptop's USB port and bingo! The details of all of the major and minor criminals in the world would be on her screen. It was a personal achievement for her, to have such an extensive record, it had taken her the better part of the year to compile it and now, if she ever wanted an update, all she had to do was hack. She had never explained to Aaron exactly how she had compiled it, she had a feeling he wouldn't approve of her dabblings in the wronger side of law.

Zoya scoffed at Aaron's words, clearly unimpressed by his line of reasoning. She, unlike her partner had a deep mistrust in relationships, especially those of the romantic kind. It was a result of the many relationships she had seen crumble that the belief in 'true love' had left her. Her love life, or lack thereof had itself been a series of disappointments, mostly for the illusioned guys who tried to date her. Most of them had been rendered unconscious courtesy Zoya's sheer lack of patience and wish to nurture a relationship with trust. The last words were successful though, in snapping her out of her musings and she studied Aaron with interest, "Of course tell me. Maybe later I will be in a worse mood due to your refusal to tell me."

PostSubject: Re: Investigation Is Gruesome But Someone's Gotta Do It   Sat Jan 28, 2012 4:09 pm

"Maybe he believes the crackpot critics who are stupid enough to think Barbie detective is all flashy accessories and no skills ... therefore he can look like he is doing something while thinking the case will actually never be solved?" Aaron suggested instantly in reply to her question, again with a question that came out like a sentence. But then it worked so well. He made a statement, she questioned his statement, he stated another statement, she questioned ... and so on until they had a statement that was completely unquestionable and therefore the answer to whatever case they had been working on. Well it worked in theory, the cases had been fewer since that blogger had released all that hate mail about 'detective barbie' and her 'no-action man'. He had found that semi-amusing but never actually mentioned it.

"Female assassins committing murders are smart enough to know wearing high heels leaves imprints which are clearly recognisable as such. Therefore you of very little faith, should deduce from this that quite clearly this was not our assassin. Plus if you take a look at any of the statistics on female murders you would know there is only 1 percent likely hood of this type of murder being committed by a woman - are you forgetting your three p's? Poison, passion and partners - the women's choice. None of which apply in this case, as is shown by the forensic report and the background check" Aaron finished with a blank expression as he continued to scribble in his note-book. He may leave her to do the grunt work most of the time, but Aaron had a fascination with past crimes and could tell you pretty much any past crime or any crime based statistic on a good day. On a bad day he was either too drunk or too high to know who you were, or what crime was, but that was irrelevant. "but on the off chance she is one in a million, and you are right, then maybe we should do some enquiries into whether Hunter knew of any female's in his life ... hey I could be wrong, its never been known to have happened, but there is a first for everything." The few times he had been wrong had been blocked out of his memory.

Aaron had expected nothing less, he knew she had views on things like that, she had views on most things. He did not know why he was defending Cassandra anyway, she had been awfully clingy, and he had never actually been in a relationship which lasted more than a night before. But somehow despite this he had to believe there was something more out there. That stupidity and illogical nature of human emotions was not in vain and there was in fact a reason behind it. Everything had to have a reason - otherwise nothing made sense - and then things were hopeless. It was hopelessness that led to the darker periods of his life, well that and his own version of boredom "well I believe that I have found irrefutable evidence that Hunter, or someone who is built very similar to him, was here at the scene at the same time as our female witness! You know they way my brain works by now, so you can likely see what I see, I wont patronize you by walking you through the evidence on the crime scene before us ... unless you want me to? You might be to tired to deal with 'special brand of crazy' as you call it!"

"Or he just wants to use me as a scapegoat." Zoya suggested in a disconnected voice with a slight trace of anger. Taking on this case had been a bad decision, now added to the pressure of solving this case, unpleasant memories were being dragged back from the deep corners of her conscious that she had stuffed them into. An astonishing amount of them were related to Hunter and if Zoya hadn't been sure that her partner would use that as leverage to make her agree to go on with another crazy plan like this one, or just make fun of her. Or if he was feeling particularly sappy, insist that she was in love with Hunter. "Which reminds me, obviously, if we follow up on our hunches, Hunter is a suspect. So when you meet him, I will be around in the vicinity, in case you need back up. that's why I wanted you to pick up the bugging equipment. Remember, I have a greater experience in dealing with Hunter. Never trust him." She added with a frown, already planning in her head which would be the most convenient place for the meeting to be held at.

"Even then, the possibility of the girl being in on the murder are high. She could have been an accomplice." She cut in shaking her head lightly at Aaron's reply. She didn't disagree with him, not completely, but it was in her nature to keep on pointing out flaws in his theory's till they reached the truth. It was one of the reasons they made such a good team. "Money and faith are always strong motivators." She added thoughtfully, pushing her hair back and wincing at the new onslaught of pain. "And far-fetched as it is, I am not ruling out the possibility of the girl or lady o be some kind of an heir left without a part in the will but then, how would murdering Charles Hunter help? Unless she was motivated by revenge. Or maybe I am just reading to much into things and she is just a scared witness. If so, then what was she doing here at that time?" She muttered to herself, animatedly following theories.

At Aaron's words she did a double take and confusion flashed across her face. "But how is that possible? I checked Hunter's flight records and he wasn't even in the country at the time of the murder!" She burst out in disbelief, "I mean, how easy can it be for an International Pop Star to slip by Airports undetected?"

"Ah so you do want to see inside my train of thought. Well I have a plan slowly forming. But I need to talk to the airport first. If it was not Hunter here then it was someone who knows him extremely well impersonating him. Not ruling out the possibility. Talking about possibilities ... nope got to focus ... work ... foot prints ... female murderesses ... similar cases ... not poison ... not main perpetrator ... but secondarily ... second person ... swap ... identity ... mixed ... airport ... two places at once ... Siamese murders ... totally repeatable ... copy-cat ... not likely ... but then all possibilities ... not the site of death ... framing ... knowledge of his intimate details ... intimate ... right sorry work ... focus ... then we need to ... but again talk to airport ... get bug on the way home ... talk to hunter ... but if hunter knows about impersonator ... or is impersonator ... dangerous ... scout around ... be prepared ... drop by home ... computer ... blogger ... double ... copy cat ... past murders ..." Aaron mumbled away too himself as he paced up and down his thoughts in full flow now as the words streamed past his lips in an endless flow of ideas which made little sense to anyone but himself, and Zoya who was beginning to learn the ways of his own brand of crazy.

"So witness ... being here ... why ... not her first time ... again why ... meeting Hunter ... arranged to meet again ... but no show ... instead the copy cat ... frightened witness ... second murder ... just like the Siamese murders ... or here for revenge ... copy cat got here first ... not as likely ... possible ... coincidences happen ... what revenge ... money ... inheritance ... but why now .... knew the copy cat ... not witness at all ... both possible threads .... depends on second murder ... need bait ... ponder more on that ... but how is it likely ..." Aaron continued as her own theories moved into his train of thought almost subconsciously as he continued to pace and talk with alarming speed that was common when he was in the zone - it was what led people to believe he was high when he was not. He would never be, not during a good case, out of a case was a different story.

"complex ... excellent ... love complex ... talk to Cassandra ... go over report ... get copy-cat report ... and begin theory hunting ... yes it is all making sense ... mmm but how ... yes that is the question ... air port security is key ... so very key" Aaron ended with triumph as he clapped his hands together with an expression of utmost delight having come to a conclusion and then he suddenly turned and without much warning went forward with the intention of forcing his partner into a very uncharacteristic hug. It was all making sense - the world was good again.

Zoya waited patiently for Aaron to finish up with his theories, a character trait that seldom made appearance. While he theorized, she distributed the work between them to save time. She was already two weeks behind on getting the case started and she didn't plan on waiting any longer. "Whoah!' She gasped as Aaron pulled her into an uncharacteristic, bone crushing hug. "C-cant breathe." She mumbled, trying in vain to make Aaron release some of the pressure.

When he finally left her, she coughed and gasped for a few seconds before going back to her organised detective self. rolling up her sleeves in the preparation fro the grunt work she had chosen for herself, she spoke to Aaron, explaining to him the division of labor as she pulled her hair in a messy, make-shift but effective ponytail. "Its 11:30 now and I doubt that we are going to find anything else. Since I suspect Slut Scientist has asked for drinks with you, I suggest you free the evening and meet Hunter over lunch. Anyway, I would prefer if our dealings with him take place during the day. So go pick up the bugs and scout around for some background info on Hunter, while I search around here for the second body, if there is one. After that, I will re-check Hunter's flight schedule and you give me a call before you meeting with him takes place. I want to keep an eye on it even though I will NOT be attending."

"Your doing it again Zo - you know what it does to me when you get bossy" Aaron lighted on there long standing inside joke with a mock groan and a grin "I would do anything for you if you only ask like that!" He then saluted and added "I should get going then. Will call if I need you!" He then turned and hands in pockets strolled causally off the field whistling too himself, to get going with his end of the assignments. There was no point in arguing with her, it never worked. Whatever she said happened - happened. Though he was going to fit in talking to airport security if it was the last thing he did. It was far too important not to get done, and to not do it himself.
